I nearly dropped the mug. Fifteen years had passed since Chloe walked out on me and our six daughters, but I could still remember standing in our cramped apartment with our nine-month-old baby in my arms while she packed designer clothes into expensive leather suitcases.
She looked at me with pure contempt.
“You can’t give me the life I want, Luca. But Daniel can. He bought me a new Mercedes and took me to the Caribbean. He gives me the life I actually deserve.”
Daniel was her corporate boss, and by then, their affair had already been going on for months. Chloe left soon afterward, and there were no birthday calls, Christmas cards, child support payments, or attempts to stay connected to the six little girls she had abandoned. For fifteen years, there was nothing but silence.
So I raised them myself. I worked double shifts at a logistics company, came home exhausted, learned how to braid hair, memorized school schedules, attended dance recitals and soccer games, and sat through every feverish night. Money was often tight, but my daughters never had to wonder whether their father would show up.
Now Jessi, my oldest, was twenty-four and preparing to marry a wonderful man. When I showed her Chloe’s message, I expected anger or tears, but Jessi only gave me a calm smile.

The entire reception hall went silent.
Jessi raised the microphone.

Chloe’s face turned bright red. She rushed toward the crate and tried to slam the lid shut, but it had been secured open.

Jessi did not move.
