\nThe recording ended.
\nMalcolm stared at the device.
\nEvelyn had been the first senior executive to defend him on Flight 418.
\nShe had ordered Parker off the aircraft.

\n“Did she threaten you personally?”
\n“No.”
\n“Did she support Vale?”
\nAndrea gave him a tired look.
\n“She supported the settlement.”
\n“That’s not what I asked.”
\n“It’s the only answer I can prove.”
\nThat distinction mattered.
\nMalcolm placed the recorder on the table.
\n“What happened after this?”
\nAndrea sat again.
\n“Evelyn came to my apartment alone.”
\n“When?”
\n“Two days later.”
\n“Why?”
\n“She told me to take the settlement.”
\n“Did she say why?”
\n“She said I couldn’t win.”
\nMalcolm’s expression hardened.
\n“That sounds like pressure.”
\n“It was.”
\n“But?”
\nAndrea looked at him.
\n“She also slipped a piece of paper into my file.”
\n“What paper?”
\n“A phone number.”
\n“For whom?”
\n“Federal labor investigators.”
\nMalcolm stared.
\nAndrea continued.
\n“I never called.”
\n“Why not?”
\n“Because my daughter was being followed.”
\nMarcus asked, “Do you still have the paper?”
\n“No.”
\n“Did Evelyn know you didn’t call?”
\n“I don’t know.”
\nMalcolm stood.
\n“So Evelyn may have been helping you.”
\n“Or protecting herself.”
\n“Which do you believe?”
\nAndrea’s answer came quickly.
\n“I believe Evelyn was afraid of Richard.”
\nThat surprised him.
\n“Evelyn doesn’t seem afraid of anyone.”
\n“People change.”
\nMalcolm thought about Flight 418.
\nEvelyn had arrived fast.
\nMaybe because she knew what could happen if another complaint became public.

\nMalcolm called her.

\nAndrea’s eyes narrowed.
\n“What are you talking about?”
\nEvelyn picked up the recorder.
\n“That device stopped before the meeting ended.”
\nAndrea frowned.
\n“No.”
\n“It did.”
\n“How would you know?”
\n“Because Richard searched you.”
\nAndrea’s face changed.
\nEvelyn continued.
\n“He found the second recorder.”
\nAndrea stood.
\n“What second recorder?”
\nMalcolm looked between them.
\nEvelyn spoke slowly.
\n“You had two.”
\n“I had one.”
\n“No.”
\nEvelyn reached into her bag.
\nShe removed a small plastic evidence pouch.
\nInside was another recorder.
\nAndrea stared.
\nHer knees nearly gave way.
\nMarcus pulled out a chair.
\n“Sit.”
\nAndrea didn’t.
\n“Where did you get that?”
\nEvelyn placed it on the table.
\n“Richard’s office.”
\n“When?”
\n“Yesterday.”
\nMalcolm’s eyes narrowed.
\n“Before Flight 418?”
\n“Yes.”
\n“Why were you in Vale’s office?”
\n“Because I’ve been investigating him.”
\nMalcolm stared.
\n“Without telling me.”
\n“I didn’t know whom to trust.”
\n“You could have trusted me.”
\n“Could I?”
\nThe question cut.
\nMalcolm said nothing.
\nEvelyn continued.
\n“You bought control of Northstar eighteen months ago. Richard has been here twenty-three years. Half the senior leadership owes him something.”
\n“That includes you.”
\n“Yes.”
\nAndrea looked at her.
\n“What do you owe him?”
\nEvelyn’s face tightened.
\n“My career.”
\nNo one spoke.
\nShe continued.
\n“Richard got me promoted. Paid for my executive law program. Recommended me for general counsel.”
\nAndrea laughed bitterly.
\n“And in return?”
\n“I cleaned things.”
\nMalcolm’s jaw tightened.
\n“What things?”
\n“Settlements. Complaints. Personnel disputes.”
\n“Discrimination?”
\n“Sometimes.”
\n“Harassment?”
\n“Yes.”

\nEvelyn looked down.

\nMalcolm stood very still.

\nMarcus tapped the second recorder.
\n“Let’s hear this.”
\nAndrea looked terrified.

\nThe room filled with static.

\nAndrea:

\nA chair moved.

\nA door slammed.
\nThen silence.
\nThen Evelyn spoke quietly.
\n“Andrea, listen to me. Take the agreement.”

\n“You expect me to trust you?”
\n“No.”
\n“Then why?”
\n“Because Parker isn’t the problem.”
\nSilence.
\nAndrea’s breathing.

\n“Forced the timing.”
\nMalcolm rubbed his forehead.
\n“So Parker wasn’t surprised I was aboard?”
\nEvelyn looked confused.
\n“What?”
\n“Steven told me I didn’t know what I was opening.”
\nAndrea stood.
\n“What exactly did he say?”
\n“That this didn’t start with him.”
\nAndrea looked at Evelyn.
\nEvelyn looked at Malcolm.
\nMarcus suddenly took the recorder.
\n“Who knew Malcolm was on Flight 418?”
\nMalcolm answered.
\n“Very few people.”
\n“Vale?”
\n“He had access.”
\nMarcus’s expression darkened.
\n“What if Parker wasn’t just acting on prejudice?”

\nEvelyn shook her head.

\nMarcus said, “Maybe Parker saw a Black passenger in 1A and acted exactly as he always acted.”

\nAndrea’s face went pale.
\nEvelyn immediately opened her laptop.
\n“What are you doing?”
\n“Checking executive travel access logs.”
\nHer fingers moved rapidly.

\nOne minute.
\nThen she stopped.

\nShe turned the laptop around.

\nSecurity.
\nExecutive assistant.
\nThe remaining eleven came from one office.
\nMalcolm read the name.
