\nMalcolm already had.
\nWHO ARE YOU?
\nThe typing indicator appeared.
\nThen vanished.
\nNo answer.
\nFlight 418 had been cleared for departure.
\nBut Malcolm no longer cared about quarterly reports.
\nSomething larger had just boarded with him.
\nDuring the flight, he called Reed Capital’s independent investigations counsel.
\nNot Northstar legal.
\nNot Northstar HR.
\nNot Richard Vale’s office.
\nIndependent counsel.
\nHer name was Sandra Pierce.
\nMalcolm told her everything.
\nBy the time Flight 418 landed in Chicago, Sandra had assembled a small external team.
\n“Do not confront Vale,” she warned.
\n“I wasn’t planning to.”
\n“Good.”
\n“I’m planning to ask questions.”
\n“That’s confronting him in a suit.”
\nMalcolm almost smiled.
\nAlmost.
\nSandra continued.
\n“Let me verify the address.”
\n“How long?”
\n“Give me one hour.”
\n“You have thirty minutes.”
\n“Malcolm.”
\n“Thirty.”
\nShe sighed.
\n“Fine.”
\nHe ended the call.
\nAt baggage claim, Denise caught up with him.
\nShe was off duty now, wearing a long black coat over her uniform.
\n“Mr. Reed.”
\n“Malcolm.”
\nShe hesitated.
\n“I wanted to thank you.”
\n“For what?”
\n“For not leaving.”
\nHe studied her.
\n“You shouldn’t have to thank the chairman for refusing to tolerate discrimination.”
\n“You’d be surprised.”
\n“I am.”
\nShe nodded.
\n“That’s the problem.”
\nMalcolm slipped his phone into his pocket.
\n“Tell me about Andrea.”
\nDenise glanced around.
\n“Not here.”
\nThey moved toward a quieter seating area.
\n“Andrea was my closest friend at Northstar,” Denise said.
\n“She was fearless. Too fearless.”
\n“Meaning?”
\n“She documented everything.”
\n“About Parker?”
\n“About Parker. Vale. Scheduling abuses. Retaliation. Passenger complaints.”
\nMalcolm leaned forward.
\n“What happened?”
\n“She told me she had enough to force an outside investigation.”
\n“When?”
\n“Six years ago.”
\n“And then?”
\n“She met with Richard Vale and HR.”
\nDenise’s voice lowered.
\n“After that meeting, she stopped answering my calls.”
\n“You never saw her again?”
\n“Once.”
\nMalcolm waited.
\n“Three weeks later. Parking garage.”
\n“What did she say?”
\n“She told me to forget her.”
\nMalcolm frowned.
\n“Exact words?”
\n“She said, ‘Denise, if you love your children, forget you ever knew me.'”
\nA chill moved through him.
\n“Did she look frightened?”
\n“Terrified.”
\n“What happened afterward?”
\n“Her number changed. Her apartment emptied. HR told us she resigned.”
\nMalcolm looked at his phone.
\n“Except HR says she was terminated.”
\nDenise nodded.
\n“Exactly.”
\nMalcolm asked, “Why didn’t you pursue it?”
\nHer face tightened.
\n“I had two daughters.”
\nNo more explanation was needed.
\nHis phone rang.
\nSandra.
\n“I checked the address.”
\n“And?”
\n“Andrea Cole lives there.”
\nMalcolm stood.
\n“Now?”
\n“As of three months ago.”
\n“Good.”
\n“Not good.”
\nHe stopped.
\n“Why?”
\n“Someone else has been paying the rent.”
\n“Who?”
\nSandra paused.
\n“Northstar Airways.”
\nMalcolm’s expression hardened.
\n“Through what department?”
\n“Executive discretionary account.”
\n“Whose authority?”
\n“I’m tracing it.”
\n“Richard Vale?”
\n“Possibly.”
\n“Possibly isn’t enough.”
\n“That’s why you pay me.”
\nMalcolm looked at Denise.
\n“I’m going there.”
\nSandra immediately objected.
\n“No.”
\n“I didn’t ask.”
\n“Malcolm, if someone has been quietly paying this woman’s rent for years, you don’t know what kind of situation you’re walking into.”
\n“Then send someone with me.”
\n“Already doing it.”
\nForty-five minutes later, Malcolm stood outside apartment 306.
\nSandra had sent former federal investigator Marcus Bell.
\nMarcus was fifty, broad-shouldered, silent, and unimpressed by wealth.
\n“Stay behind me if something feels wrong,” Marcus said.
\n“I’m not twelve.”
\n“Then don’t behave like you’re twelve.”
\nMalcolm knocked.
\nNo response.
\nHe knocked again.
\n“Andrea Cole?”
\nNothing.
\nMarcus looked at the doorframe.
\n“No forced entry.”
\nMalcolm knocked harder.
\n“Ms. Cole, my name is Malcolm Reed. I’m chairman of Northstar Airways.”
\nA sound came from inside.
\nVery small.
\nSomething falling.
\nMarcus raised a hand.
\n“Someone’s in there.”
\nMalcolm stepped back.
\nThe lock clicked.
\nThe door opened three inches.
\nA woman looked through the gap.
\nEarly fifties.
\nDark hair streaked with gray.
\nThin face.
\nSharp eyes.
\n“Who?”
\n“Malcolm Reed.”
\nShe stared at him.
\nThen at Marcus.
\n“You shouldn’t be here.”
\nMalcolm replied, “I’ve heard that twice today.”
\nHer eyes shifted.
\n“Leave.”
\n“Captain Steven Parker refused to operate Flight 418 because I was sitting in seat 1A.”
\nAndrea’s expression changed.
\nOnly slightly.
\nMalcolm continued.
\n“Denise Carter filed a complaint against him nine years ago.”
\nThe door opened another inch.
\n“Denise?”
\n“She’s safe.”
\nAndrea closed her eyes.
\nThen whispered, “Is she still flying?”
\n“Yes.”
\nA strange smile appeared.
\n“She always loved the sky.”
\nMalcolm waited.
\nAndrea looked down the hallway.
\nThen opened the door.
\n“Five minutes.”
\nInside, the apartment was almost empty.
\nNo family photos.
\nNo decorations.
\nOne couch.
\nOne table.
\nTwo chairs.
\nStacks of boxes lined the far wall.
\nMalcolm noticed all of them were labeled by year.
\n“What’s in those?” he asked.
\nAndrea did not answer.
\nShe sat.
\n“You control Northstar now?”
\n“Yes.”
\n“How much?”
\n“Enough.”
\n“That’s not a number.”
\n“Fifty-eight percent voting control.”
\nAndrea laughed softly.
\n“Then Richard must hate you.”
\n“Why?”
\n“Because before you arrived, he thought Northstar belonged to him.”
\nMalcolm sat opposite her.
\n“Tell me what happened.”
\nAndrea stared at him.
\n“No.”
\n“You’ve hidden for six years.”
\n“Correct.”
\n“Northstar has paid your rent.”
\nHer face went blank.
\n“Who told you?”
\n“I found it.”
\n“Then stop finding things.”
\n“Why?”
\nAndrea looked toward Marcus.
\n“Is he security?”
\n“Independent investigator.”
\n“Independent from Northstar?”
\n“Yes.”
\nSome tension left her shoulders.
\nNot much.
\nMalcolm continued.
\n“Did Richard Vale threaten you?”
\nAndrea said nothing.
\n“Did he force you to resign?”
\nNothing.
\n“Were you fired?”
\nHer eyes lifted.
\n“All three.”
\nMalcolm frowned.
\n“Explain.”
\n“I filed a formal complaint. They offered a settlement. I refused. Richard told me I’d never work in aviation again.”
\n“Then?”
\n“HR terminated me.”
\n“Why does the company say you resigned?”
\n“Because two days later they offered a new settlement.”
\n“For silence?”
\n“For disappearance.”
\nMarcus finally spoke.
\n“What does that mean?”
\nAndrea looked at him.
\n“They gave me money. A small apartment. Medical coverage. In exchange, I vanished.”
\n“Why accept?”
\nAndrea’s face hardened.
\n“Because somebody followed my daughter home from school.”
\nMalcolm’s body went still.
\n“Who?”
\n“I never found out.”
\n“Did Vale know?”
\n“He mentioned her school the next morning.”
\nMarcus leaned forward.
\n“Exact words.”
\nAndrea’s eyes went distant.
\n“He said, ‘Children deserve stability, Andrea. It would be tragic if your choices disrupted hers.'”
\nMalcolm felt anger rise.
\nControlled.
\nCold.
\n“What evidence did you have?”
\nAndrea looked toward the boxes.
\n“Enough.”
\n“What kind?”
\n“Emails. Flight logs. complaints. recordings.”
\n“Recordings?”
\n“Yes.”
\n“Of Vale?”
\n“Among others.”
\nMalcolm stood.
\n“I need them.”
\n“No.”
\n“Andrea.”
\n“No.”
\n“People are still exposed.”
\n“People were exposed when I tried.”
\n“I am not Richard Vale.”
\n“No.”
\nShe looked directly at him.
\n“You’re more dangerous.”
\nMalcolm’s expression changed.
\n“Why?”
\n“Because you believe power can fix things.”
\nHe said nothing.
\nAndrea continued.
\n“Sometimes power is the thing that broke them.”
\nMalcolm sat again.
\n“Then help me use it differently.”
\nAndrea studied him.
\nLong silence.
\nThen she stood.
\nShe walked toward the boxes.
\nPulled one down.
\nOpened it.
\nInside were envelopes, old phones, USB drives, printed screenshots, handwritten notes.
\nShe removed a small digital recorder.
\n“Richard had three people he protected.”
\nMalcolm listened.
\n“Steven Parker was one.”
\n“Who were the others?”
\nAndrea looked at him.
\n“One is retired.”
\n“And the third?”
\nShe handed him the recorder.
\n“Still at Northstar.”
\n“Who?”
\n“Listen.”
\nMalcolm pressed play.
\nStatic.
\nThen voices.
\nAndrea’s younger voice.
\nRichard Vale.
\nA third person.
\nAndrea saying:
\n“You can’t keep burying these complaints.”
\nVale replying:
\n“We’re protecting the company.”
\nAndrea:
\n“You’re protecting Parker.”
\nThen the third voice.
\nCalm.
\nFemale.
\n“Andrea, sign the agreement.”
\nMalcolm froze.
\nHe knew that voice.
\nHe looked at Andrea.
\n“Who is that?”
\nAndrea’s expression became grim.
\n“You know.”
\nMalcolm replayed it.
\nThe woman spoke again.
\n“Sign the agreement, Andrea.”
\nHis stomach dropped.
