Passenger complaint. First-class reassignment dispute.&#8221;<br \/>\nSteven shook his head.<br \/>\n&#8220;That was investigated.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Apparently not adequately.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;It was nonsense.&#8221;<br \/>\nEvelyn moved to the next page.<br \/>\n&#8220;2017. Employee complaint.&#8221;<br \/>\nDenise looked up sharply.<br \/>\nSteven noticed.<br \/>\n&#8220;What?&#8221;<br \/>\nShe said nothing.<br \/>\nEvelyn continued.<br \/>\n&#8220;Cabin crew member alleged repeated discriminatory comments regarding passengers.&#8221;<br \/>\nSteven laughed bitterly.<br \/>\n&#8220;Anonymous.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;It wasn&#8217;t anonymous.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe afterward.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;I had bills.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe simplicity of the answer hit harder than anger.<br \/>\nSteven&#8217;s face tightened.<br \/>\n&#8220;You smiled at me.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;I was doing my job.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;You accepted flights with me.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;I requested transfers away from you eleven times.&#8221;<br \/>\nSteven looked at Evelyn.<br \/>\n&#8220;That&#8217;s not true.&#8221;<br \/>\nEvelyn removed another page.<br \/>\n&#8220;It is.&#8221;<br \/>\nMalcolm felt something cold settle in his stomach.<br \/>\nThis was no longer about one ugly incident.<br \/>\nIt was about a system.<br \/>\nA system that had seen warning signs.<br \/>\nRecorded them.<br \/>\nThen buried them deeply enough that executives like Malcolm never them.<br \/>\n&#8220;This is turning into a witch hunt.&#8221;<br \/>\nMalcolm faced him.<br \/>\n&#8220;No.&#8221;<br \/>\nHis voice remained calm.<br \/>\n&#8220;This is becoming an audit.&#8221;<br \/>\nSteven stepped closer.<br \/>\n&#8220;Because I challenged you.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Because seven people challenged you before I did.&#8221;<br \/>\nSteven opened his mouth.<br \/>\nMalcolm continued.<br \/>\n&#8220;And apparently nobody listened.&#8221;<br \/>\nEvelyn closed the folder.<br \/>\n&#8220;We need to move this discussion off the aircraft.&#8221;<br \/>\nMalcolm shook his head.<br \/>\n&#8220;Not yet.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Why?&#8221;<br \/>\nHe looked toward the passengers.<br \/>\n&#8220;Because they deserve to know whether they&#8217;re leaving.&#8221;<br \/>\nEvelyn nodded.<br \/>\nOperations had already located a replacement captain.<br \/>\nAnother pilot was being transported from the adjacent terminal.<br \/>\nExpected delay: forty-five minutes.<br \/>\nShe announced it.<br \/>\nA surprising number of passengers said they would stay.<br \/>\nRachel Bennett, the woman filming, spoke from row two.<br \/>\n&#8220;I&#8217;ll stay.&#8221;<br \/>\nAnother man nodded.<br \/>\n&#8220;So will I.&#8221;<br \/>\nA third passenger said, &#8220;I want to see how this ends.&#8221;<br \/>\nSteven looked disgusted.<br \/>\n&#8220;This isn&#8217;t entertainment.&#8221;<br \/>\nRachel lowered her phone.<br \/>\n&#8220;You&#8217;re right.&#8221;<br \/>\nHer voice hardened.<br \/>\n&#8220;It&#8217;s accountability.&#8221;<br \/>\nSteven turned away.<br \/>\nHis shoulders had dropped.<br \/>\nFor the first time, Malcolm wondered what was happening beneath the anger.<br \/>\nShame?<br \/>\nFear?<br \/>\nOr calculation?<br \/>\nMalcolm knew were.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Then stop treating me like one.&#8221;<br \/>\nEvelyn gestured to a ground supervisor.<br \/>\n&#8220;Go with him.&#8221;<br \/>\nSteven walked toward the cockpit.<br \/>\nAs he passed Denise, he stopped.<br \/>\n&#8220;You did this.&#8221;<br \/>\nDenise looked at him.<br \/>\n&#8220;No.&#8221;<br \/>\nSteven&#8217;s mouth twisted.<br \/>\n&#8220;You&#8217;ve hated me for years.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;I feared you for years.&#8221;<br \/>\nMalcolm heard the difference.<br \/>\nSteven did too.<br \/>\nHe continued walking.<br \/>\nThe cockpit door closed behind him.<br \/>\nMalcolm looked at Denise.<br \/>\n&#8220;Why was your complaint dismissed?&#8221;<br \/>\nShe hesitated.<br \/>\n&#8220;Officially?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Yes.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Insufficient evidence.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;And unofficially?&#8221;<br \/>\nDenise gave a tired smile.<br \/>\n&#8220;He was a senior captain. I was a flight attendant with two kids and a mortgage.&#8221;<br \/>\nMalcolm&#8217;s expression tightened.<br \/>\n&#8220;Who told you to drop it?&#8221;<br \/>\nDenise looked toward Evelyn.<br \/>\nEvelyn immediately noticed.<br \/>\n&#8220;Denise.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Does the name Richard Vale mean anything?&#8221;<br \/>\nEvelyn&#8217;s face changed.<br \/>\nMalcolm saw it.<br \/>\n&#8220;Who is Richard Vale?&#8221;<br \/>\nEvelyn answered slowly.<br \/>\n&#8220;Former head of flight operations.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Former?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Current executive vice president.&#8221;<br \/>\nMalcolm stared at her.<br \/>\nOne of Northstar&#8217;s most senior officers.<br \/>\nA man Malcolm had spoken with twice that week.<br \/>\nRichard Vale had personally briefed the board on safety, staffing, pilot retention, and internal culture.<br \/>\nHe had also recommended extending Steven Parker&#8217;s senior captain status.<br \/>\nMalcolm looked toward the closed cockpit door.<br \/>\n&#8220;What exactly did Vale tell you?&#8221;<br \/>\nDenise&#8217;s fingers tightened around her removed name badge.<br \/>\n&#8220;He said Captain Parker was too valuable to lose over misunderstandings.&#8221;<br \/>\nMalcolm said nothing.<br \/>\nDenise continued.<br \/>\n&#8220;He said people sometimes interpreted confidence as prejudice.&#8221;<br \/>\nRachel muttered, &#8220;That&#8217;s convenient.&#8221;<br \/>\nDenise nodded.<br \/>\n&#8220;He told me my complaint could hurt my career more than his.&#8221;<br \/>\nEvelyn inhaled slowly.<br \/>\n&#8220;Did he put any of that in writing?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;No.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Anyone witness it?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;One person.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Who?&#8221;<br \/>\nDenise looked toward Mina.<br \/>\n&#8220;No longer with the airline.&#8221;<br \/>\nMalcolm asked, &#8220;Name?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Andrea Cole.&#8221;<br \/>\nEvelyn began typing.<br \/>\n&#8220;Former cabin manager?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Yes.&#8221;<br \/>\nEvelyn looked surprised.<br \/>\n&#8220;You know her?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;I handled a settlement involving her departure.&#8221;<br \/>\nDenise stared.<br \/>\n&#8220;What settlement?&#8221;<br \/>\nEvelyn stopped typing.<br \/>\nMalcolm turned to her.<br \/>\n&#8220;What settlement?&#8221;<br \/>\nEvelyn hesitated.<br \/>\nThat was enough.<br \/>\n&#8220;Evelyn.&#8221;<br \/>\nShe sighed.<br \/>\n&#8220;Wrongful termination allegation.&#8221;<br \/>\nDenise&#8217;s face drained.<br \/>\n&#8220;Andrea wasn&#8217;t fired.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;According to HR, she was.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;She resigned.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;That&#8217;s not what her file says.&#8221;<br \/>\nMalcolm felt the pattern growing.<br \/>\nOne complaint could be mishandled.<br \/>\nTwo could be coincidence.<br \/>\nSeven, plus a disputed termination, plus a senior executive shielding a captain?<br \/>\nThat was architecture.<br \/>\nSomebody had built this.<br \/>\nSteven emerged from the cockpit carrying his flight case.<br \/>\nThe ground supervisor followed.<br \/>\nSteven saw everyone&#8217;s faces.<br \/>\n&#8220;What now?&#8221;<br \/>\nMalcolm looked at him.<br \/>\n&#8220;Do you know Andrea Cole?&#8221;<br \/>\nThe flight case slipped slightly in Steven&#8217;s hand.<br \/>\nOnly slightly.<br \/>\nBut Malcolm saw it.<br \/>\nDenise saw it too.<br \/>\n&#8220;She worked here years ago.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;She filed a complaint.&#8221;<br \/>\nSteven shrugged.<br \/>\n&#8220;Lots of employees file complaints.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;She was terminated.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;I wouldn&#8217;t know.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Interesting.&#8221;<br \/>\nSteven&#8217;s eyes narrowed.<br \/>\n&#8220;What&#8217;s interesting?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Your reaction when I said her name.&#8221;<br \/>\nSteven stepped closer.<br \/>\n&#8220;You&#8217;ve decided I&#8217;m guilty of something.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;I haven&#8217;t decided anything.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;You&#8217;re enjoying this.&#8221;<br \/>\nMalcolm&#8217;s expression became almost sad.<br \/>\n&#8220;No.&#8221;<br \/>\nThat answer silenced Steven more effectively than anger.<br \/>\nMalcolm returned to his seat.<br \/>\n&#8220;I was hoping to spend this flight reviewing quarterly financials.&#8221;<br \/>\nHe picked up the leather folder.<br \/>\n&#8220;You made yourself more important.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe replacement captain arrived twenty minutes later.<br \/>\nCaptain Laura Mitchell.<br \/>\nForty-seven. Veteran pilot. Crisp posture. No theatrics.<br \/>\nShe boarded, spoke quietly with operations, then approached Malcolm.<br \/>\n&#8220;Mr. Reed.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Captain.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;I understand there has been a significant incident.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;There has.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;I&#8217;ve reviewed the operational side.
