The cool, humid Florida air hit my face, a stark contrast to the dry heat of the desert I had left thirty-six hours ago.
Standing by the perimeter fence was a black pickup truck.
Marcus was leaning against the driver’s side door, his arms crossed over his chest. Marcus had served alongside me in two deployments before retiring to run a private security firm in Pensacola. If there was one man in the world I trusted with my life and the lives of my children, it was him.
“Welcome back, David,” Marcus said, pulling me into a brief, solid brotherly embrace. He looked at my face and didn’t bother offering empty sympathies. He knew better.
“How are my kids?” I asked as I threw my gear into the back seat.
“Emily is holding it together like a soldier, but she’s scared, man,” Marcus said quietly as he pulled out onto the highway. “I’ve had a guy parked down the street from your house in an unmarked van for the last five days. Yesterday afternoon, a guy in a dark Mercedes pulled into your driveway at 3:00 PM. He didn’t leave until 7:00 AM this morning.”
My jaw tightened, but I kept my eyes fixed on the dark highway ahead. “Who is he?”
Marcus handed me a manila folder from the dashboard. “His name is Julian Vance—no relation to you. He’s a local real estate developer. High-end suits, flashy car, heavily leveraged in debt. From what my guy gathered, Natalie’s been meeting him at country clubs while you were deployed. He thinks she’s a wealthy military wife whose husband leaves her with endless cash.”
I opened the folder. Inside were high-resolution photographs taken with a telephoto lens:
Natalie standing on my front porch in a silk robe, kissing Julian Vance on the cheek as he held a bottle of expensive wine.
Julian driving my custom Ford F-150—the truck I had spent three years restoring in my garage—with his arm hanging out the window.
Natalie and Julian sitting at an upscale waterfront restaurant, laughing as she handed him an American Express card bearing my name.
“He’s driving my truck?” I asked, my voice dangerously low.
“Yeah,” Marcus grunted. “He parked his Mercedes in your garage and took your truck out to the marina last night.”
I closed the folder and set it on my lap.
“What’s the plan for the kids?” Marcus asked.
“Emily has volleyball practice tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 PM,” I said, pulling out my phone. “Evan has his after-school robotics club until 4:30 PM. I’m picking them up directly from school. Natalie won’t even know they’re gone until 6:00 PM.”
“And then?”
“Then I’m taking them to your guest house in Destin,” I said. “I’m putting them under your wife’s care for the evening so they are nowhere near that house when I step through the front door.”
“And what happens at the house?” Marcus asked, glancing at me sideways.
I looked down at the key ring in my hand—the key to my home, my garage, and my front door.
“At 8:00 PM tomorrow,” I said softly, “Natalie’s fairytale comes to an absolute, unmitigated end.”

CONTINUE TO PART4 →

The wheels of the C-17 transport plane slammed onto the tarmac at Hurlburt Field under a heavy cover of midnight fog.
